Why This Matters

OpenAI's potential iPhone app launch for Codex signifies a strategic move to expand its productivity tools and integrate AI more seamlessly into mobile workflows. This development could enhance user accessibility, streamline coding and task management, and strengthen OpenAI's position in the AI app ecosystem for consumers and developers alike.

Key Takeaways

ChatGPT remains the top downloaded app on the App Store, and it sounds like OpenAI will launch a new iPhone app soon.

OpenAI might be planning an iPhone version of its Codex app

OpenAI has been investing heavily in its Codex desktop with updates arriving almost daily. Today’s release includes a new prompt that asks users one question: “What type of work do you do?”

The feature adjusts the user interface for Codex based on the response. Options include engineering, product, finance, marketing, sales, operations, data science, design, student, and “something else.”

This feature arrives as OpenAI looks to expand Codex’s appeal beyond agentic coding as a general productivity app. Building inside Codex allows the ChatGPT app to remain streamlined while offering a more capable solution for workflows.

OpenAI could also be planning Codex remote control features from the ChatGPT app, but bringing a version of Codex to iOS would expand its reach beyond the desktop.

If Codex is indeed a new iPhone app, it would be OpenAI’s third iOS app after Sora. The company discontinued the video generation social feed app in March.

Earlier in the month, Codex gained the ability to use apps on the Mac without taking over the cursor. This means you can use Codex to run tasks on your Mac without giving up the ability to use your machine at the same time.

In addition to enhancing the Codex desktop app, OpenAI recently introduced a subscription designed for Codex users. OpenAI also released GPT-5.5, upgrading the capabilities of ChatGPT and Codex, alongside Images 2 for image generation.
