Why This Matters

The success of the Schmigadoon! Broadway spinoff and its multiple Tony nominations could influence Apple TV's decision to revive the canceled series, highlighting how cross-media achievements can impact streaming content strategies. This underscores the importance of multi-platform success in determining a show's future in the evolving entertainment landscape.

Key Takeaways

Apple TV’s musical comedy Schmigadoon! earned a loyal following, but was canceled after two seasons. Now though, a Broadway spinoff has proven a hit and earned significant acclaim, as evidenced by today’s Tony nominations. And that could be good news for a prospective season 3 of Schmigadoon! on Apple TV.

Schmigadoon! stage show is most-nominated new musical at Tony Awards, sparking fresh hope for Apple TV revival

Today the Tony Awards announced nominees for Broadway’s biggest awards of the year. And Schmigadoon! earned a whopping 12 nominations, including Best Musical.

Those 12 nominations lead all other shows, save for The Lost Boys which also scored 12 nods.

I am sad to share that Apple will not be moving forward with season 3 of Schmigadoon! The season is written (including 25 new songs), but we unfortunately won’t be making it. […]

Paul then hinted to Entertainment Weekly last year that the show could be revived at some point:

There have been some talks about it. Most of the movement is inside my heart, but I’m not giving up. I’m really proud of the work that all of us in the writers’ room did, and I think the fans would really love it. Take heart in the fact that I have not given up and there are other people that are fans of the show who would also love to see that happen. You just never know; life is long.
