Why This Matters

Apple’s upcoming macOS 27 introduces subtle yet useful AI enhancements to its productivity apps, such as automatic file name suggestions based on content analysis in Pages, Numbers, and Finder. These features aim to streamline workflow and reduce manual effort for users, reflecting Apple's ongoing integration of AI to improve user experience. While not headline-grabbing, these improvements demonstrate Apple's focus on incremental AI-powered productivity tools that benefit both consumers and the tech industry by enhancing efficiency and usability.

Key Takeaways

While the new Siri AI is, of course, taking the headlines, there are a number of less spectacular but still useful AI enhancements in Apple’s upcoming operating systems.

I recently highlighted the new AI photo editing tools, and Macworld has spotted a small but handy AI enhancement to Apple’s productivity apps …

The site’s Halyna Kubiv found that both Pages and Numbers were automatically suggesting file names for the documents she was creating.

When you create a new Numbers, Pages, or TextEdit document and fill it with content, the AI model on your Mac accesses it, analyzes the content, and suggests a suitable name for the file. For example, after a few minutes, my ordinary Numbers file became “User Engagement Metrics iOS 27.” On a Pages document, the app appropriately recommended the file name “iOS 27 Review” after a few minutes of writing.

More than one potential name is suggested, and you can either accept one of these or, of course, type your own name instead. The file names automatically appear when you are a few minutes in, and are also suggested when you save a new document for the first time.

We’ve found the same thing is true in the Finder: if you right-click on an image or text file, for example, it suggests filenames.

I suspect we’re going to discover a whole bunch of similar small but handy AI-powered enhancements in each of the new OS versions.
