Cyberpunk 2077 is certainly a modern classic, but calling a game released in 2020 “retro” would still be pushing it. However, the Commodore 64 has no such problem. If you’re old enough to remember the legendary home computer from the first time around, you might be excited to hear about the new Night City version.
You heard right — the Commodore 77 is a Cyberpunk 2077-themed special edition of the modern Commodore 64 Ultimate. This isn’t just a logo slapped on the side, either. Its battered yellow-and-black design is inspired by Seocho Electronics from the Cyberpunk universe, right down to some suitably dystopian-looking keys.
Beyond the shell, the Commodore 77 comes with a “Shard” cartridge containing an exclusive 8-bit Cyberpunk demo created by Commodore and Arise Designs, with 24-channel stereo SID music from LukHash. It might not be a full game, but the idea of seeing Night City squeezed onto hardware descended from a computer launched more than four decades ago certainly has an appeal.
The special edition gets an upgraded AMD Artix 7 XC7A100T processor capable of reaching 77 MHz, plus a themed spiral-bound manual featuring Cyberpunk-inspired BASIC programs and lore. The box also includes Commodore x Cyberpunk 2077 pins and stickers, an extra-long HDMI cable, and a worldwide power adapter that Commodore jokingly describes as “compatible with Night City.”
Underneath all that neon is the revived Commodore 64 Ultimate. Rather than simply emulating a C64 in software, the machine uses an FPGA to recreate the original hardware, while adding modern conveniences such as HDMI, USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet. It’s built to play more than 10,000 retro games, while also letting you code in BASIC, make music, and generally disappear into a much less distracting era of computing.
The Commodore 77 is available to pre-order now for $377, with shipping beginning in batches from February 2027. That’s a fair way off, but if you’ve been waiting since the ’80s to revive the C64 dream, a little more patience shouldn’t be a problem.
