Why This Matters

Apple's recent updates to App Store pricing and tax policies in several countries highlight the ongoing adjustments developers and consumers must navigate due to changing international tax laws and currency rates. These changes emphasize the importance of flexible pricing strategies and awareness of regional regulations in the global app economy.

Key Takeaways

Apple’s Developer blog today announced tax and price updates for apps, In-App Purchases, and subscriptions in several regions. Here are the details.

Tax changes hit three countries starting today

In a new post on the Apple Developer blog, the company announced two rounds of tax and price updates that will be applied to apps and In-App Purchases across several App Store storefronts.

The first, starting today, changes developer proceeds to account for new or updated taxes in three countries:

Morocco: Value‑added tax (VAT) introduction of 20%

Republic of the Congo: VAT introduction of 18%

Tanzania: Digital sales tax (DST) rate increase from 2% to 3%

The second, beginning September 14, will adjust App Store prices in four countries. From the post:

Pricing for apps and In-App Purchases will be updated for Israel, Indonesia, Morocco, and the Republic of the Congo if you haven’t selected one of these storefronts as the base storefront for your app or In‑App Purchase. These updates also consider the VAT introductions listed in the tax updates section above. If you’ve selected Israel, Indonesia, Morocco, or the Republic of the Congo as the base storefront for your app or In-App Purchase, prices on that storefront won’t change. On other storefronts, prices will be updated to maintain equalization with your chosen base price.

While Apple didn’t detail the specific price changes in its announcement, the company says that the new prices are already available in the Pricing and Availability section of App Store Connect.
