GoKawiilRPCS3 developers warn of counterfeit Blu-ray drives sold on Newegg, AliExpress
The team behind the PS3 emulator RPCS3 has issued a social media warning about a surge in counterfeit Blu-ray drives being sold online. The fakes reportedly use older, inferior drive mechanisms disguised with the casings, packaging and spoofed firmware of higher-end models, meaning they cannot read PS3 discs. The developers published a wiki guide detailing identifying signs such as misspelled labels, misaligned logos and incorrect manufacturing dates.

Buyers relying on a Blu-ray drive for RPCS3 compatibility could unknowingly purchase hardware that fails to work, since the counterfeits mimic genuine products closely enough to pass casual inspection. This warning comes amid a broader contraction in Blu-ray hardware availability, as major manufacturers exit the market, which could make genuine drives scarcer and potentially increase incentives for counterfeiting. The situation suggests buyers may need to be more cautious when sourcing optical drives from third-party marketplaces.
