Developer builds THC, a JIT compiler for Haskell running on GraalVM/Truffle

GoKawiil Brief

A developer named Edward Kmett describes THC ('Turbo Haskell compiler'), a project begun a week ago that implements all of GHC 9.14.1's prim-ops and runs GHC Core via a Truffle/GraalVM-based JIT. GHC still handles parsing, typechecking and optimization, while THC executes the resulting Core, supports both JIT and ahead-of-time compilation via Native Image, and can already compile programs including pandoc, happy, alex and GHC itself.

Why It Matters

GoKawiil's interpretation of the reporting above, not reported fact.

The project suggests it may be possible to run Haskell programs on the JVM with polyglot interoperability, letting Haskell code call directly into Python, Ruby, R, JavaScript and native C/C++ libraries without copying data. This could open paths for Haskell to tap into JVM tooling, machine-learning or visualization libraries, though the project is only a week old and described informally by its author, so its maturity and performance in production use remain unproven.
