GoKawiilGFiber to launch Wi-Fi 8 gateway built on Qualcomm chipset ahead of IEEE standard
GFiber, Qualcomm and Gemtek have announced a Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway for GFiber's 20 Gig fiber customers, using Qualcomm's Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite Platform, which combines a penta-core CPU and an NPU. Gemtek will manufacture the device, and GFiber says current 20 Gig subscribers using Actiontec Wi-Fi 7 gateways will be upgraded once certification is complete. The move follows TP-Link's recent preorder announcement for its own Wi-Fi 8 router, even though the IEEE 802.11bn standard hasn't been finalized.

Releasing hardware ahead of formal ratification suggests manufacturers are racing to claim early market position in next-generation Wi-Fi, though early adopters risk compatibility issues if the final standard differs from pre-release chipsets. Qualcomm's emphasis on 'native edge AI' and an 'agentic AI framework' indicates networking hardware vendors are positioning routers as AI processing hubs, not just connectivity devices. Limited availability tied to GFiber's costly 20 Gig tier also means this upgrade will reach a narrow slice of U.S. customers initially.
- GFiber's Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway uses Qualcomm's Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite Platform and is manufactured by Gemtek.
- The IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) standard is not yet ratified, but TP-Link and GFiber are already releasing related hardware.
- Only GFiber's $250/month 20 Gig subscribers in select U.S. markets will initially receive the upgraded gateway.
TP-Link Wi-Fi 8 Router — If you're intrigued by the race toward Wi-Fi 8 but don't want to wait on a carrier-locked gateway, TP-Link's early Wi-Fi 8 router lets you get a head start on next-gen wireless speeds and efficiency. It's a great pick for early adopters who want to future-proof their home network before the standard is even finalized.
