Ozempic and Similar Drugs Could Help Ward Off Dementia, Study Suggests

The case for Ozempic as a dementia buster is building. Research published this week has found that GLP-1 drugs are associated with a lower risk of dementia in people with type 2 diabetes. Researchers in Ireland led the study, a review of the existing evidence. Compared to controls (like other forms of medication or a placebo), people on GLP-1 therapy were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with dementia, the researchers found. Other scientists and pharmaceutical companies have already begun to test these drugs in clinical trials for dementia prevention. Ozempic, Wegovy, and similar drugs mimic the hormone GLP-1, which helps regulate our blood sugar and appetite (the drugs are made with the active ingredient semaglutide).
