Study finds aging hippocampus blends separate memories rather than erasing them

Researchers scanning brains of adults aged 18 to 74 found that memory accuracy for face-object and face-scene pairings dropped sharply after young adulthood, with middle-aged and older participants performing similarly rather than declining gradually. In older adults, the same hippocampal activity patterns that supported accurate recall in younger people were instead linked to cross-category errors, such as confusing a scene with an object. The study, published in Cerebral Cortex, found that brain shrinkage and attention differences did not fully explain this shift.

Google launches AI design tool Google Pics inside Workspace

Google introduced Google Pics, an AI-powered image creation and editing tool built on its Nano Banana model, rolling out to Workspace business customers and Google AI Pro/Ultra subscribers. Rather than offering design templates or a creator marketplace like Canva, the tool lets users generate and edit visuals like posters and social posts through text prompts, with features for object isolation, text editing, and collaborative multi-version generation. It launches first inside Docs and Slides, with Drive integration to follow.

Design historian catalogs the first web page styles from 1993

A design professor has compiled a list of the earliest recognizable web design trends from 1993, tracing them back to the pre-boom era of the World Wide Web following Tim Berners-Lee's original 1991 page at CERN. The analysis distinguishes genuine web-native design conventions, born from the technology and culture of the time, from styles simply imported from other media. It highlights how amateur creators in the mid-1990s shaped distinctive visual genres unique to the early web.

Google's Android Auto lets users declutter and reorder home screen apps

Android Auto ships with roughly a dozen app icons on its home screen by default, including tools like Adobe Acrobat and IFTTT that most drivers will never use behind the wheel. Omnivery data shows bot clicks surging across Gmail, Outlook inboxes

A new report from email platform Omnivery finds that automated bot clicks in consumer email inboxes have jumped from 2% to 16% since 2023, with Gmail alone seeing contamination rise from 2% to over 20%. The bots largely stem from mailbox providers' own security systems prefetching and scanning links before delivery, not malicious activity, but they still distort click-through metrics publishers rely on.
