Sony's new PlayStation 5 system software update (26.06-14.00.00) turns on the 'Enhance PSSR Image Quality' setting by default for PS5 Pro owners. This applies Sony's newer, upgraded PSSR upscaling algorithm to games originally built around the first version of PSSR, without users needing to manually toggle it. The enhanced PSSR itself launched in March as an optional setting, not a new PSSR 2.0 release.
Arm has introduced its new Mali G2 series of mobile GPUs, led by the G2-Ultra, which brings neural network-based resolution upscaling to smartphones for the first time. The chip also delivers modest rasterization gains of roughly 9-14% in gaming benchmarks over the previous G1-Ultra, alongside a reworked execution engine with doubled shader registers that better supports advanced rendering techniques like Unreal Engine 5's Lumen and Nanite.
Converting standard footage to 4K resolution requires generating new pixels to fill a larger frame, and there are two main approaches: traditional interpolation, which calculates new pixel values based on surrounding color and brightness data, and AI upscaling, which uses models trained on low- and high-resolution image pairs to predict sharper detail. Older interlaced footage adds another wrinkle, since it must be de-interlaced before either upscaling method can be applied properly.
