Flinders researchers identify vanillin as candidate for wound-healing materials
A Flinders University team at the Biomedical Nanoengineering Laboratory has identified antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties in vanillin, the compound found in vanilla and also produced synthetically from clove oil or rice. The researchers say its chemical structure allows it to interact with reactive oxygen species, cell membranes and polymer matrices, making it suitable for biomedical formulations such as wound dressings and drug delivery systems.
