CDC Report Finds 19 Drug-Resistant Germs Cause 9.7 Million U.S. Infections Yearly

The CDC has released its first comprehensive assessment of antibiotic-resistant pathogens in seven years, estimating that 19 such germs cause 9.7 million infections and more than 50,000 deaths annually in the U.S. Four pathogens—including the fungus Candida auris, drug-resistant gonorrhea, Acinetobacter, and Enterobacterales—were ranked as the most urgent threats, while neisseria meningitidis was newly added as a concerning threat due to growing resistance to common antibiotics. The report also noted a decline in C. diff infections, leading the CDC to downgrade its threat level.

CDC: Drug-resistant infections now kill 50,000 Americans annually

The CDC reports that infections and deaths caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and fungi have increased in the United States since 2019. The agency now estimates that roughly 50,000 Americans die each year from these so-called superbug infections.

Ada Yonath, Nobel-winning ribosome crystallographer, dies at 87

Israeli structural biologist Ada Yonath, who won a share of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for revealing the ribosome's structure through X-ray crystallography, has died at age 87. She was the first scientist to grow crystals suitable for mapping this cellular protein-making machinery, and her later work on antibiotic-ribosome interactions illuminated drug resistance mechanisms.
