XPipe developers report Java's new AOT cache feature causes JVM crashes

XPipe, a company building a Java-based application, detailed its experience adopting the JDK's new ahead-of-time (AOT) cache feature, which records a training run of an application to speed up later startup and warmup. According to XPipe's writeup, the feature frequently fails to apply due to compatibility issues, yielding no benefit, and in some cases causes the JVM to crash unexpectedly when misconfigured.

OpenJDK JEP 544 adds AOT native code compilation to HotSpot JVM

OpenJDK's JEP 544 proposes extending HotSpot's existing AOT cache mechanism to store precompiled native code generated during a training run, making it instantly usable when an application starts in production. If workload behavior shifts, the JVM falls back to dynamic JIT compilation to maintain performance, blending AOT and JIT approaches without requiring any code or configuration changes from developers.
