Arctic researchers track decades-long carbon release from 2007 Alaska tundra fire

Scientists studying Alaska's 2007 Anaktuvuk River tundra fire found it released over 2 million tons of carbon, roughly canceling out that year's global tundra carbon uptake. More than a third of the burned area has since sunk and crumpled as underlying ice wedges collapsed, and researchers including Adrian Rocha continue to measure ongoing carbon dioxide and methane emissions from the most severely burned patches using flux towers.
