Astronomers analyzing James Webb Space Telescope data have identified an unusual celestial object that some researchers believe could be a so-called 'black hole star,' a rare hybrid where a black hole is enshrouded in thick gas that mimics stellar light. The classification remains tentative, with further observation needed to confirm whether the object fits this proposed new category.
Researchers at Curtin University analyzed 76 million radio images over 29 days using a prototype SKA-Low station and detected 112,534 unauthorized emissions from 1,806 Starlink satellites within the exact frequency band needed to study cosmic dawn hydrogen signals. The leakage, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, comes not from intentional Starlink transmissions but from unplanned electronic interference radiating through satellite hardware, including periodic 13-kHz tones near 137 MHz.
A team of astronomers, led by Sarah Burke-Spolaor at West Virginia University and Michelle Ntampaka at the Space Telescope Science Institute, posted an unreviewed white paper on arXiv outlining four archetypes for research groups to help them decide how to use AI tools like large language models. Rather than proposing a single universal policy, the framework maps each lab type against its research priorities using a radar-style diagram to suggest which AI applications, from code generation to writing assistance, best fit its values.
