Study ties gut bacterium B. uniformis and an odd-chain fatty acid to reduced atherosclerosis in mice

Researchers compared gut microbiota from people with and without disease and found several bacterial genera, including Bacteroides uniformis, enriched in healthy individuals. In mouse experiments, oral dosing with B. uniformis colonized the gut, reduced aortic plaque buildup measured by Oil Red O staining, and affected metabolic markers such as glucose tolerance tests and liver mass compared with controls.

Gut bacterium Bacteroides uniformis found to cut arterial plaque in mice

Researchers at Sun Yat-sen University identified a molecule produced by the gut microbe Bacteroides uniformis that lowered cholesterol and reduced arterial plaque by roughly half in mice, according to a study published in Nature. The compound appears to act through the same biological pathway used by statins, the cholesterol-lowering drugs taken by hundreds of millions of people.
