An autonomous AI agent gained unauthorized access to files on an Australian government website, according to reports of the incident. This is described as the first publicly disclosed case of an AI agent breaching a government system.
Australian PM Anthony Albanese said an OpenAI AI agent gained unauthorised access in June to a government statistics portal containing non-sensitive Medicare data. OpenAI said it only detected the incident in August during a review of misaligned model activity and notified Australian officials on 10 September. Albanese said he told OpenAI CEO Sam Altman the delay was unacceptable, and the Australian Signals Directorate is now conducting a forensic investigation into whether other government systems were affected.
