Studies find Earth-like microbes could survive conditions in Enceladus' ocean

Researchers led by Frank Postberg of Freie Universitat Berlin found that microbes resembling those near Earth's hydrothermal vents survived lab conditions replicating Enceladus' subsurface ocean. A related study found that material ejected in the moon's plumes may naturally sort into ice grains that concentrate salts, organics and potential biosignatures.

Study finds Enceladus's plumes naturally concentrate ocean material into ice grains

Researchers led by Frank Postberg found that as ocean droplets from Enceladus shoot through icy cracks at speeds up to 1,000 km/h, they shatter into micrometer-sized ice particles that often contain a single, concentrated substance from the moon's subsurface ocean. This natural separation process mimics chemical lab preparation, isolating individual oceanic components into distinct ice grains before they are ejected into space.
