IoT Fridge Attacks Hit French Blood Banks and European Supermarkets

Hackers exploited vulnerable internet-connected refrigeration systems, briefly spiking temperatures at three French blood and plasma storage sites on November 2, according to the Établissement Français du Sang. The same wave of attacks hit refrigerators at supermarket chains across at least 11 European countries and previously affected hundreds of French stores and several US military commissaries, forcing large amounts of food to be discarded.

French blood service EFS hit by cyberattack on refrigeration systems

A cyberattack struck refrigeration controllers used by Établissement Français du Sang, France's national blood service, affecting equipment at three sites, including one in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. EFS's own alarm system detected the intrusion, allowing staff to transfer blood stock to working units before any spoilage occurred. France's Health Ministry confirmed no biological materials were lost and said it is monitoring the situation.
