Boreal Wildfires

Studies find climate models omit key feedback loops, risking faster warming

A September study in Environmental Research Letters found that natural feedback effects—thawing permafrost, wildfires, warming lakes and wetlands—could add 0.2°C to 0.4°C of warming this century beyond the 2.6°C already projected. Most climate models used in UN assessments don't fully account for these feedbacks, and some omit them entirely. A separate March analysis in One Earth found that three of these feedback sources alone could shorten the time before the world breaches 1.5°C and 2°C thresholds by up to 25%.
