Brown University robot learns to handwrite unseen languages after training on Japanese

Researchers Stefanie Tellex and Atsunobu Kotani at Brown University built a robot system that, after training solely on Japanese characters, was able to reproduce handwriting in Hindi, Greek, English print and cursive, and even sketch the Mona Lisa without direct training on those examples. The system works using two coordinated models: one governing individual pen strokes and another managing the overall structure of characters.

LUX-ZEPLIN detects unexplained particle event that may hint at dark matter

Researchers on the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, led in part by Brown University scientists, detected a single particle interaction consistent with a WIMP dark matter candidate of at least 200 GeV/c2 mass. The signal reached only 2.6-sigma statistical significance, far below the 5-sigma threshold needed to claim discovery, but stood out because background noise in that region is unusually low.
