Hobby OS Moxnox hits version 1.0 with NT-style design and Btrfs support

Moxnox 1.0, a hobbyist operating system modeled on Windows NT's syscall design but POSIX-compatible, has been released for amd64 and aarch64 architectures. The roughly 130,000-line C++ project includes a GNU base system, can run on the Btrfs filesystem, and is mature enough to self-host, meaning it can compile itself. The developer notes the Btrfs implementation works for basic use but warns against mounting anything beyond disposable test filesystems.

Developer proposes BeamFS, a Linux filesystem with built-in data repair

Aurelien Desbrieres has submitted an 18-patch proposal for BeamFS, a new Linux filesystem that embeds Reed-Solomon error-correcting codes into every data block rather than relying on redundant copies like Btrfs or ZFS. He is seeking feedback, not a merge, after earlier proposing a related filesystem called FTRFS in April. Desbrieres has also disclosed that he used Anthropic's Claude AI to write the code, patch-checking tool, and cover letter.

Blogger Finds Soldered RAM Failure Unfixable on Lenovo X1 Carbon

A blogger running a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon purchased in 2021 reported browser crashes and BTRFS filesystem errors, which memtest86+ testing traced to failing RAM. Because the laptop's memory is soldered directly to the motherboard rather than installed in replaceable DIMM slots, the faulty RAM cannot be swapped out as it could on older machines.
