Study reveals fruit fly brain uses 'split attractor' to set navigation goals quickly

Researchers used two-photon calcium imaging and optogenetics in fruit flies to study how the central complex, specifically the fan-shaped body region of the brain, encodes a navigational goal. They describe a neural mechanism called a 'split attractor' design that allows flies to rapidly write and update a heading goal used for orientation behaviors. The experiments combined live brain imaging with tethered flies walking on an air-supported ball to track behavior alongside neural activity.

Mouse study maps amygdala-hypothalamus circuit controlling stress response

Researchers at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai used male and female C57BL/6J and GAD2-IRES-Cre mice to study a neural circuit linking the amygdala to the anterior hypothalamus. Using whole-brain imaging, optogenetic silencing and calcium imaging, they examined how this circuit influences an animal's sensitivity to stress. No sex differences were found in behavioral or neuronal measures, so sex was dropped as a variable in the final analysis.
