Ubuntu 26.10 finishes switch to Rust-based coreutils, replacing cp, mv and rm

Canonical's Ubuntu 26.10 completes its migration to Rust-written core utilities after resolving TOCTOU security flaws that had forced cp, mv and rm to remain on their GNU versions in 26.04 LTS. The release, codenamed 'Stonking Stingray', now ships a full uutils suite covering tools like ls, cat, chmod and du.

Canonical backs Bristol PhD to automate C-to-Rust code conversion

Canonical is funding a three-year PhD project at the University of Bristol's Programming Languages Research Group aimed at automatically converting large C codebases into Rust. UK Research and Innovation is providing matching funds, and the project will be led by student Alex Wood under Professor Meng Wang, with Dr. Cristina David and Canonical's Jon Seager as co-supervisors.
