University of Utah study links MCT1 transporter to heart's lactate-based energy supply
Researchers at the University of Utah analyzed human heart tissue from transplant patients and donor controls, alongside genetically engineered mouse models lacking cardiac MPC1, MCT1 or MCT4, to study how the heart imports and uses lactate for energy. The work shows that the transporter protein MCT1 is required for mitochondria to import lactate, supporting cardiac metabolic function.
