Novartis's pelacarsen fails to cut heart-attack risk in Lp(a) trial

Novartis announced in early September that pelacarsen, a drug designed to lower lipoprotein(a), did not reduce cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes and emergency bypass surgery in patients with existing heart disease. The Lp(a)HORIZON trial had tested whether an 80%-plus reduction in Lp(a) levels would translate into fewer clinical events, but the company has not explained why the trial failed, and did not respond to requests for comment.

Gut bacterium Bacteroides uniformis found to cut arterial plaque in mice

Researchers at Sun Yat-sen University identified a molecule produced by the gut microbe Bacteroides uniformis that lowered cholesterol and reduced arterial plaque by roughly half in mice, according to a study published in Nature. The compound appears to act through the same biological pathway used by statins, the cholesterol-lowering drugs taken by hundreds of millions of people.

US stroke rates among adults under 55 nearly double since 1990s, study finds

New research indicates that stroke incidence among Americans younger than 55 has roughly doubled compared with rates recorded in the 1990s. Researchers say they have not yet identified a clear explanation for the rise in younger patients.

Regenerative-medicine trials underrepresent women and exclude non-binary participants, study finds

An analysis by researchers including the article's author found that women make up around 41% of participants in cardiovascular disease clinical trials generally, but only 18-20% in regenerative-medicine trials for the same condition. Self-identified non-binary people were largely absent from these studies, according to the 2021 analysis.
