Developers digging through the iOS 27.2 beta code have found unreleased features beyond what's already visible in testing. Discoveries include a live countdown timer for upcoming Apple Music album releases, expanded third-party app support for Shortcuts' 'Describe a Shortcut' AI tool, and a new 'Drive Mode Theme' option for CarPlay Ultra that adjusts gauge styles, colors, and ambient lighting.
Apple's CarPlay Ultra extends the CarPlay experience across every display in a vehicle, taking over instrument functions like the speedometer and fuel gauge and integrating controls such as climate and radio directly into the interface. Despite standard CarPlay running in over 800 vehicle models, Ultra currently only works on select Aston Martin vehicles in the US and Canada, requires an iPhone 12 or newer, and functions wirelessly only.
A new report suggests Apple's upcoming foldable phone, launching today, will be called the iPhone Duo rather than the previously rumored iPhone Ultra. The device is expected to lack certain premium features found in the iPhone 18 Pro Max, such as a telephoto lens, variable aperture, and Face ID.
Ford VP Alan Clarke explained that after evaluating Apple, Google, and other mapping providers, the company chose Apple Maps for native integration in its upcoming Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, including the Fathom model. He cited Apple's flexibility, improved map quality, and close collaboration on EV-specific needs like range estimation and battery preconditioning as deciding factors.
