Startups push small, distributed batteries as alternative to utility-scale storage

At a New York Climate Week event, companies including PopWheels, Copper, Every Electric and David Energy described distributed battery systems as a response to public pushback against large centralized storage sites. PopWheels operates about 50 battery-swap cabinets with 2,500 batteries for e-bike delivery riders and is expanding to food carts, while Copper builds induction stoves with integrated batteries and Every Electric and David Energy sell plug-in batteries for homes and businesses.

Copper updates Charlie induction range with more power, 240V support

Copper has released an updated version of its Charlie induction stove, boosting the broiler to 3,000 watts, increasing induction zone power to 3kW, and cutting oven preheat time to 3:50 for 350°F. The new model also adds compatibility with 240-volt outlets in addition to 120-volt, and Copper has partnered with Miele to manufacture the ranges at a factory in Alabama.

Data centre industry weighs replacing copper wiring with optical connections

Digital Realty's chief technology officer Chris Sharp says the data centre industry is moving away from copper for internal networking, though not electrical power or cooling systems. A typical 100MW facility uses around 400 tonnes of copper overall, with up to 20 tonnes used specifically in the wiring that connects servers together. Sharp argues this copper wiring between GPUs and CPUs is now a bottleneck limiting performance.

Copper-Rs adds live telemetry with deterministic 'twin' replay for robots

Copper-Rs, a Rust-based robotics framework, has introduced a live telemetry system that streams copperlists using forward error correction so a remote 'twin' copy of the robot's software stack can decode, reorder, and self-heal from lossy connections. The twin stack can even jump to recovery points if too much data is lost, ending up running an exact mirror of the robot's live process, which can then be logged or displayed for operators.

Modder builds steampunk PC with Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RX 9070 XT using copper blowtorch reservoir

Reddit user Old-Mate-Fetus built a custom open-frame PC combining an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU and Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU with 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory. The standout feature is a steampunk-style copper liquid cooling loop, including a reservoir repurposed from an old Primus blowtorch, all mounted on a handmade antique wooden base with brass screws hiding the Corsair 850W SFX power supply.

Dyson launches Corrale CoolShine straightener with liquid-cooled plates

Dyson has introduced two new hair styling tools: the $329 Corrale CoolShine straightener, which adds water-filled cooling pipes alongside its flexing heated copper plates, and the $249 Airsmooth dryer brush, which combines Supersonic dryer technology with anti-snag looped bristles. The CoolShine heats, straightens, and then cools hair in a single pass to limit prolonged heat exposure, while the Airsmooth uses a teardrop shape and collapsible bristle loops to add volume and reduce tangling.

BT's copper phone lines could fetch over $2.7 billion as fiber rollout continues

As BT subsidiary Openreach replaces the UK's aging copper phone network with fiber broadband, the recovered copper is turning into a lucrative asset. Rising global copper demand, driven by AI data centers and electrification, has pushed the potential value of BT's recovered metal from roughly £1.5 billion to over £2 billion. Openreach has already recovered more than 22,000 metric tons of copper since 2023 and has a recycling deal with EMR that recently paid £99 million upfront.

Sur La Table launches resale site for used cookware, discounts up to 70%

Sur La Table has introduced a dedicated resale platform allowing customers to buy pre-owned cookware, including premium copper pots, at prices reduced by as much as 70% compared to new items. The move mirrors resale initiatives pioneered by outdoor brand Patagonia, extending the secondhand model into the kitchenware category.
