Smithsonian-led ARMS project tracks decade of life on deep coral reefs

Researchers led by Luiz Rocha deployed standardized collection devices called ARMS (Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures) at various depths—around 10, 50, and 100 meters—at sites including Palau, Guam, the Marshall Islands, and French Polynesia between 2016 and 2018. The stacked-plate structures act as artificial mini-reefs, becoming colonized by larvae of sponges, corals, shrimp, mollusks, and other organisms, which scientists later retrieve and study to compare biodiversity across depths and locations.

New tracer converts fossil fuel CO2 emissions into real-world harms

A newly released 'Carbon Impacts Tracer' translates projected CO2 output from fossil fuel projects into tangible consequences such as heat-related deaths and coral reef degradation. The tool aims to make emissions figures, typically expressed in abstract tonnage, more understandable by linking them to specific human and ecological impacts.

UN report says 1.5°C warming limit will be exceeded, urges emergency action

A new UN Environment Programme report titled 'Limiting Overshoot' concludes that surpassing 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming above pre-industrial levels is now unavoidable. The paper notes current warming is near 1.4 degrees, but even with all existing climate pledges fulfilled, temperatures would still hit at least 1.8 degrees, while current trends point toward 2.6 degrees by 2100.
