New research examining stellar activity finds that outbursts resembling the Sun's coronal mass ejections and flares are uncommon among similar stars. Researchers compared magnetic and rotational characteristics across many stars to explain why the Sun's behavior may be more of an exception than the norm.
Scientists led by Endawoke Yizengaw at The Aerospace Corporation analyzed data from the intense November 2025 solar storm and found unprecedented, coast-to-coast atmospheric disturbances across the continental United States. These disturbances pushed GPS positioning errors past 10 meters in some regions, a scale of disruption not previously documented.
The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii has produced the most detailed video and simulations ever recorded of swirling plasma on the sun's surface. The footage shows turbulent motion resembling hurricanes or mixing ocean currents, offering visual support for a long-theorized process occurring where plasma of differing densities interacts.
