Helix Carbon pitches electrolyzer that recycles blast furnace CO2 into iron-making gas

Helix Carbon has built an electrolyzer-based process that converts carbon dioxide from blast furnace exhaust back into carbon monoxide, which can be reinjected into the furnace to help reduce iron ore. CEO David Brown says the system can process raw, unpurified exhaust directly, unlike most electrolyzers that require concentrated CO2 feedstock. The company says this reduces the amount of coke needed in iron production.

Book by landscape architect Billy Fleming highlights local decarbonization successes

Landscape architect Billy Fleming has published a book documenting communities that have successfully pursued decarbonization and climate justice initiatives. The book arrives amid a year marked by severe climate disasters, including a glacier-collapse flood in Nepal, a European heat wave blamed for over 35,000 deaths, and crop-destroying temperature swings in the U.S. Midwest.

Hertha Metals unveils single-step furnace to cut steelmaking emissions and costs

Hertha Metals founder Laureen Meroueh has developed a new furnace design that converts iron ore directly into refined liquid steel in one step, replacing coal with natural gas. The company says this approach can cut carbon emissions by at least half and reduce production costs by 25% compared with conventional steelmaking.
