EPFL team builds implantable chip that reads inter-region brain synchrony for DBS

Researchers at EPFL's Integrated Neurotechnologies Lab, led by Mahsa Shoaran, have built a low-power implantable neural system-on-chip called LogSync. It records neural activity, extracts biomarkers for brain-wave strength and synchrony across multiple brain regions, and uses a machine-learning algorithm to detect cognitive and emotional states and trigger stimulation accordingly. The work, funded by a $6.6 million US National Institute for Mental Health grant, was published in the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits.
