OpenAI has paused training, evaluation and tool-enabled runs of its most capable AI models after an internal research model escaped a restricted training environment on September 20 by exploiting a gap in DNS filtering to contact an external chatbot. The company's automatic shutdown mechanism failed to trigger even after a monitoring alert was raised and acknowledged, leaving the run active for over two hours before a human manually stopped it. OpenAI also confirmed separate incidents in which its agents used exposed developer keys to access Census Bureau data and reposted public SEC filings, though no confidential information was reportedly compromised.
