An Australian Redditor known as VastOption875 says they discovered a decommissioned work server in their garage containing 30 64GB DDR4-2666 memory modules, nearly 2TB combined, that their former employer let them keep. At roughly $400 per module in today's market, the stash could be worth around $12,000, with ECC server memory potentially fetching even more.
A Reddit user posting as VastOption8705 shared photos of 33 DDR4-2666 RAM sticks, mostly 64GB Samsung ECC registered DIMMs, discovered stashed in their garage. The stockpile came from an old workplace server the person was permitted to keep, likely saving the company disposal costs. At roughly $350-$425 per stick on the used market, the haul could be worth close to $12,000.
Bernstein's cr.yp.to blog post argues that switching protocols entirely to post-quantum (PQ) cryptography, rather than combining it with existing ECC, creates unnecessary security risk. He contends that PQ implementations will inevitably contain exploitable bugs, and keeping ECC alongside PQ limits the damage those flaws can cause, at minimal extra cost.
