Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the open-source AI model repository used by over 18 million developers hosting more than 3 million models, in a deal valued at roughly $12.93 billion. Nvidia says Hugging Face will keep operating as an independent, open platform, allowing developers to use any framework, cloud or hardware, not just Nvidia's own chips.
TechCrunch is recruiting more than 100 volunteers for Disrupt 2026, its flagship startup conference running October 13-15 at Moscone West in San Francisco. Volunteers must commit at least 12 hours during the event, attend an in-person orientation on October 12, and be at least 18 years old, in exchange for free three-day admission. Applications close September 25.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang defended the company's expanding financial backing of AI startups and data center projects, arguing critics misunderstand the unprecedented capital needs of building and deploying AI. He spoke on CNBC after Nvidia posted stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings, noting the firm has invested in model makers like OpenAI and Anthropic and backed massive compute projects, including a $105 billion Ohio campus and a $500 billion Wall Street financing partnership.
A satellite-based analysis led by Xiao-Peng Song and Matthew Hansen at the University of Maryland found that global tree cover increased by roughly 2.24 million square kilometers, an area comparable to Texas and Alaska combined, between 1982 and 2016. The gains, concentrated in temperate, boreal, and subtropical zones, offset major losses in tropical forests caused by deforestation, fire, and drought.
