Researchers develop drugs that mimic exercise's effects in mice and early human trials

Pharmacologist Thomas Burris and colleagues created a compound that activates a muscle receptor normally boosted by exercise, producing mice with greater endurance and possible cognitive and heart-failure benefits; Burris founded Pelagos to pursue a clinical trial. Separately, biotech firm Cambrian Bio reported in June that its drug ATX-304 raised metabolism and cut liver and belly fat in obese, prediabetic patients by activating an energy-sensing cellular switch.

US Army Tests Smartphone-Based Combat Network in Indonesia Exercise

The U.S. Army ran a military exercise in Indonesia in which soldiers used smartphones integrated into their combat gear to share data and coordinate on the battlefield. The drill served as a demonstration of emerging digital warfare tools, though technical problems surfaced during the exercise.

Essay Argues Modern Footwear and Sedentary Habits Are Weakening Human Feet

A personal reflection describes how underused feet can lose their natural function as a broad stabilizing surface, gradually shrinking in effective support to a line and then even to a point-like contact with the ground. The author attributes their own instability to an underdeveloped foot and notes it has improved through deliberate practice, likely including barefoot movement and exercise.

Lab-grown contracting muscle implants replicate exercise effects in mice

Scientists at the Institute for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine in Beijing grew muscle stem cells from mouse quadriceps into small tissue grafts, called myografts, and implanted them under the skin of the animals' backs. The grafts formed organized, blood-vessel-fed muscle tissue that contracted continuously for months, producing gains in muscle mass, strength and bone density and slowing age-related muscle decline, according to a study published in Nature Aging.
