The Electrical Safety Foundation International says extension cords aren't designed as permanent wiring and can degrade when left connected continuously. Unplugging a cord after use gives owners a chance to spot cracked insulation, loose connections or overheating plugs before they become hazards.
A homeowner had an electrician install a dedicated 20A floor outlet, specifically for powering multiple raclette machines during gatherings, while the house was still under construction and wiring was accessible. The outlet was even labeled with a cheese icon on the official electrical diagram, filed alongside other living room circuits. A neighbor liked the idea so much he installed one too, but had to break three tiles since his home was already finished.
