A developer released a VBIOS editor plus Windows and Linux loaders that let GeForce RTX 30, 40 and 50 series owners run custom firmware without writing to the GPU's flash chip. On Windows the edited image is stored in the driver's registry key and loaded at GPU restart, while the Linux version patches Nvidia's open kernel modules to boot the GSP firmware from the custom image. The editor exposes controls such as power limits, voltage ceilings, clock offsets, current protections and fan settings, with examples including an RTX 5090 FE raised from a 600W to 700W power ceiling and an RTX 4090 pushed to 671W from 550W.

The default configuration on a consumer router is tuned for setup convenience, not for the years it then spends untouched. A few changes cover most of the gap.

Hobbyists are using AI assistants like Claude to write custom firmware for synths, samplers and grooveboxes from Elektron, Roland, Akai, Novation, Arturia and others, a process that once took weeks of expert work. The $70 M-Vave FM-1, a Yamaha DX-7 clone, has become a focal point, with dozens of community firmware projects such as Felucca, Sloop and x0x crediting Claude as a contributor on GitHub.

A developer has produced a fully annotated disassembly of the original 8 KiB firmware used in DEC's 1978 VT100 terminal, which ran on an Intel 8080 microprocessor. The documentation cross-references the firmware code with DEC's original Technical Manual and print set to explain how the terminal's functions were implemented.

Some Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses users reported their devices recorded and transcribed conversations even though they hadn't activated the AI assistant with the wake phrase, including users who had disabled the 'Respond without Hey Meta' setting. Meta told Android Authority the issue has been resolved and that users can review or delete voice logs through settings, but has not explained what caused the bug or how many devices were affected.

A security research team documented their process of dumping and analyzing firmware (version 3.4.2.2h) from the Eufy HomeBase 2 device, following up on earlier work examining a Eufy doorbell. Because the HomeBase's flash chip was soldered directly to the board with no exposed test pins, the researchers used spring clips and a Raspberry Pi to physically read the Winbond flash memory chip.

The open-source memory testing tool Memtest86+ now runs on ARM64 systems with UEFI and ACPI, tested on Qualcomm Snapdragon X laptops, Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 with community firmware, and QEMU. The update also lets users save full test reports to a FAT32 USB drive via F6, introduces a new bus stress test for DDR5+ systems, and reworks test algorithms with SIMD instructions for faster, more thorough error detection.

Overnight Monday, attackers broke into commercial refrigeration controllers at major French grocery chains, pushing fridge and freezer temperatures up to 50°C and spoiling stock, with some incidents reportedly sparking small fires. The intrusions reportedly extended normal defrost cycles to disguise the attack as routine maintenance, and over 400 stores across France, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Germany and Belgium were affected in a single night. Two supermarkets in Alsace alone reported combined losses of roughly 270,000 euros.

Multiple Reddit users reported that their Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, including 2nd- and 3rd-generation models, saved audio recordings and transcripts to the Meta AI app even though they hadn't said the wake phrase and had the 'Respond without Hey Meta' setting disabled. The issue reportedly appeared after a firmware update, and Meta's initial support response only suggested disabling core features like microphone permissions and automatic updates rather than explaining the cause. Meta later told users the issue 'has been resolved' without detailing what caused it.

Oxide has released sp-emu, an open-source tool that emulates Cortex-M7 and Cortex-M33 microcontrollers on illumos and Linux (x86 and ARM), replacing an earlier simulation-only stub called SpSim. The emulated devices run Oxide's Hubris firmware directly and communicate over sockets with the Management Gateway Service and Inter-Processor Communication Channel, allowing the company's Voxel virtual lab to interact with them as if they were real service processors. A key engineering challenge was replicating time: since Hubris schedules work off a 1ms SysTick and the emulator has no wall clock, the team built a custom clock that counts instructions rather than real time.

Organizers of Hack the North, Canada's largest hackathon, replaced the traditional cardstock name tag with a custom hardware badge featuring an LED display, buttons, audio and wireless radio that attendees could fully program. The project, pitched eight months earlier, went through four hardware iterations before reaching a final production run of 1,750 units, with the design, firmware and an emulator all released as open source.
