OpenAI publishes over 700 AI-generated mathematics manuscripts

On October 6, OpenAI released more than 700 mathematical papers produced by an internal AI system, some with formal proofs written in the Lean proof-verification language and others still at earlier stages of verification. A mathematician who reviewed the release, previously a FOCS program committee chair, reported feeling detached from the material rather than engaged, unlike his experience evaluating human-submitted research.

OpenAI's Navier-Stokes proof included a Lean 4 formal verification, done in 17 hours

Alongside its human-readable proof resolving a longstanding Navier-Stokes question, OpenAI also released a machine-checkable Lean 4 formal proof, completed in about 17 hours. The author contrasts this with historical estimates that formalizing research-level math could take tens of thousands of person-hours by hand.
