Career experts say many job applicants are experiencing silence from employers after interviews or applications, leaving candidates uncertain about their standing in a competitive job market. They point to overwhelmed hiring teams, high application volumes, and shifting recruitment practices as contributing factors.
Young job seekers report widespread ghosting by recruiters, unprofessional interview conduct, and dismissive treatment during their job searches. These experiences are compounding an already difficult entry-level job market for Gen Z workers.
A June 2026 Resume Builder survey of 1,000 recent bachelor's degree graduates found that 34% had a job offer pulled back after accepting it, with 13% saying it happened more than once. Separately, 68% reported being ghosted by employers after interviews, and 65% believe AI is reducing entry-level openings in their field.
