Scientists develop new glue inspired by cholera bacterium's structure

Researchers have created a novel adhesive material based on structural mechanisms found in the cholera bacterium, according to a report highlighted by Nature. The glue reportedly exhibits unusual properties not seen in conventional adhesives, drawn from biological processes the bacterium uses.

speedata open-sources boxesandglue, a Go-based typesetting library

A developer building speedata Publisher has detailed a new Go library called boxes and glue, designed to replicate the typesetting functions LuaTeX currently handles for the Publisher. Unlike LuaTeX, which is one monolithic program, boxes and glue splits each stage of page layout—page composition, paragraph line-breaking, hyphenation, text shaping, glyph handling and PDF output—into separate, independently usable Go modules. Both speedata Publisher and boxesandglue are open source and hosted on GitHub.

Researchers detail TRI-611, a brain-penetrant ALK degrader that boosts TKI efficacy

Preclinical data show TRI-611 forms a ternary complex with ALK kinase and CRBN/DDB1, promoting degradation of ALK protein including the EML4-ALK fusion. Combined with TKIs like alectinib and lorlatinib, TRI-611 enhanced tumor suppression in NCI-H3122 xenograft mice without significant body weight loss, indicating a tolerable combination therapy approach.

Silvis Materials develops biodegradable cellulose adhesives to replace petroleum glues

Silvis Materials, cofounded by MIT alum Patty Ferreira, has created adhesives made from cellulose that fully biodegrade, aiming to replace petroleum-based glues used in packaging labels, furniture joints, and construction materials. Ferreira notes that petroleum adhesives currently prevent otherwise recyclable containers from being processed because the glue holding labels on contaminates the recycling stream.
