Few EV systems let cars recharge from solar during grid outages
A blog post examining vehicle-to-home (V2H) setups finds that most automakers treat home backup power as a one-way, discharge-only function rather than allowing the car to recharge from rooftop solar while the grid is down. GM's and Ford's current V2H offerings disconnect the home from the grid and power it from the EV, but do not support recharging the vehicle during an outage, and Ford has discontinued the hardware needed for its automatic backup feature. Kia's Wallbox Quasar 2 claims V2H support but reportedly has reliability issues and cannot run solar charging and V2H simultaneously, leaving Tesla's Powershare with the Cybertruck as the only setup the author found that supports bidirectional charging during an outage.
