After five years of development, Pistol Shrimp Games has launched a free public demo of Free Stars: Children of Infinity, the sequel to The Ur-Quan Masters made by that game's original creators. The demo focuses solely on the melee combat mode, letting players choose from 38 ships—including nearly all classic Ur-Quan Masters vessels plus new additions—for head-to-head arcade battles. It's available now on Steam and GOG for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with console versions still to come.
A new open-source project called OpenTIE reimplements LucasArts' Star Wars: TIE Fighter so it runs natively on Windows, macOS and Linux. Rather than including game assets itself, it requires players to own the original 1995 Collector's CD-ROM or 1998 Windows release, and lets users mix elements from both, such as pairing 1998 flight visuals with the 1995 adaptive iMUSE soundtrack. A companion project, OpenXWA, similarly ports X-Wing Alliance.
Ubisoft apologized after shipping a digital release of Heroes of Might and Magic III and its expansions that contained no actual game data, just a 23.4-kilobyte file that produced an error on launch. The mistake sparked a wave of negative Steam reviews before Ubisoft issued a fix, which Engadget confirmed now runs properly.
CD Projekt Red announced a remastered version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, arriving September 29th with upgraded visuals, revamped combat, a reworked skill tree, and both expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, included. The upgrade will be free for existing owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, and the remaster will also bring the game to Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
