Snap confidentially settled a case alleging its platform caused severe psychological distress to two teenage users, following similar settlements by Meta, TikTok and YouTube in the same litigation. Separately, Google was sued this week by parents who say their child suffered a psychological crisis after interacting with the Gemini chatbot through Google Classroom.
An advocate general at the EU's top court said Google's Gemini chatbot may breach press publishers' rights when it reproduces recognizable portions of articles or bypasses paywalls to generate answers. The opinion, issued in a case brought by Hungarian site Like Company, found no evidence Google used the publisher's content to train Gemini, and noted that using copyrighted text for AI training is permitted under the EU's text-and-data-mining exception. The Court of Justice of the European Union is expected to rule in coming months, typically following its advisers' guidance.
Apple released Xcode 27.3 beta 1, which adds GitHub Copilot as a supported AI model within the app's built-in coding assistant. This follows earlier integrations of ChatGPT, Claude, Codex, Claude Agent, and Google Gemini across recent Xcode versions. The beta also ships with Swift 6.4 and SDKs for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, macOS, and visionOS 27.3.
Google has turned off its Gemini chatbot and certain AI-powered Google Search features by default for student accounts managed through its education platform. The change follows a Wall Street Journal investigation examining how Google rolled out AI tools in schools and raised concerns about their effects on children.
Google says K-12 schools must enable its Gemini AI tools alongside Search, since the two will now be off by default for student accounts until administrators turn them on. VP Chris Phillips says schools that fully disable Gemini will also lose access to Google Search, seeing a blocked-service message instead of results. The policy applies to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Search within Google Classroom, used by over 150 million students and educators worldwide.
A reader poll of more than 1,200 respondents found over 60% believe Google Gemini's performance has declined in recent months, with complaints of misunderstandings and degraded output. Excluding non-users, nearly two-thirds of respondents reported dissatisfaction, while about 20% said they saw no decline and 14.6% were unsure. Commenters described Gemini as frustrating and said rival assistants now outperform it for everyday tasks.
