pgrust v0.4-beta's Gravity engine claims up to 3x ClickHouse speed on ClickBench

The pgrust team released v0.4-beta featuring Gravity, a new query engine built with a custom compiler that generates machine code for SQL queries. According to the developers, Gravity runs up to three times faster than ClickHouse on the ClickBench benchmark while still supporting the full Postgres SQL dialect and type system. The engine builds on earlier work using batching, operator fusion, SIMD, and a copy-and-patch JIT compiler.

Lucid Motors' EV production drops to lowest since early 2025

Lucid Motors produced 2,954 electric vehicles in the third quarter, marking a 54% decrease from the previous year and the lowest output since early 2025. The company also delivered 3,806 EVs, remaining steady from the previous quarter but below expectations, amid ongoing struggles to attract buyers for its luxury models. CEO Silvio Napoli has initiated cost-cutting measures, including layoffs and factory adjustments, while delaying the launch of a more affordable model, the Cosmos.

Study Links Tidal Forces to Timing of Slow-Slip Earthquakes

New research finds that slow earthquakes, subtle fault movements that can precede larger seismic events, are often triggered when gravitational pulls from the sun and moon align with fault stress. Researchers describe the tidal effect as similar in force to a light hand push, but say its timing can be enough to nudge a fault into slipping.

European report warns rising satellite numbers heighten Kessler syndrome risk

A new European report examines the growing risk of orbital collisions as active satellites have surged from roughly 1,000 in 2013 to about 17,000 today, according to CelesTrak. SpaceX's Starlink constellation accounts for most of this growth with around 11,000 satellites, while Amazon, Chinese internet constellations, and planned orbital data centers are set to add many more.

BepiColombo sheds propulsion module, nears final approach to Mercury

The ESA-JAXA BepiColombo probe separated from its propulsion module on September 3, completing the final phase before entering low orbit around Mercury. The mission, delayed nearly a year after a thruster malfunction forced a slower trajectory, has traveled roughly 9.9 billion kilometers using nine gravity-assist maneuvers around Earth, Venus and Mercury.

Tidal gravity data point to hot spot beneath Mars' crustal divide

Scientists modeled how Mars' gravity field shifts over time due to solar tides, using a technique that lets gravity harmonic coefficients vary periodically at annual, semi-annual and other frequencies within orbit-determination software. By tracking these small periodic gravity variations, they detected a thermal anomaly located beneath the boundary separating Mars' northern lowlands and southern highlands, known as the crustal dichotomy.
