Globus traces 25-year evolution of GridFTP data transfer protocol
In a retrospective blog post, GridFTP co-creator John Bresnahan describes how the protocol was built in the late 1990s to move massive scientific datasets between geographically distributed instruments, data centers, and visualization facilities. He cites examples like CERN's Large Hadron Collider and Argonne's Advanced Photon Source, which generated multiple petabytes of data monthly, as key drivers behind GridFTP's design, which now underpins the Globus data transfer service.
