Apple has filed a motion seeking to overturn a jury's $5.7 billion patent infringement verdict awarded to Taction Technology over Taptic Engine technology used in iPhones and Apple Watches. Apple argues Taction never presented evidence of what its patented contribution was actually worth, instead asking jurors to pick a reasonable royalty themselves, after the court had already excluded and barred testimony from Taction's damages expert before trial.
A federal jury ruled that Apple must pay Taction, a San Diego haptics company, more than $5.7 billion for unintentionally infringing two patents related to the Taptic Engine used in iPhones and Apple Watches. Taction originally sued in 2021, saw the case dismissed in 2023, and had it revived by the Federal Circuit appeals court before the verdict was issued Friday. Apple has said it disagrees with both the verdict and damages and plans to appeal.
