CDC sets aside $1.6M for suspended Guinea-Bissau hepatitis B vaccine trial

Rolling Stone reports that CDC director's office staff instructed the agency's budget office in late September to earmark $1.6 million for a vaccine trial in Guinea-Bissau that was suspended in January after being widely criticized as unethical. The trial, which would expose newborns to hepatitis B risk, is to be run by Danish researchers Christine Stabell Benn and Peter Aaby, who are currently under investigation by Danish authorities for alleged scientific misconduct. HHS did not respond to a request for comment.

Edible battery made from rice-paper-like material tested in pigs for ingestible devices

Researchers have built a biodegradable battery using magnesium and molybdenum trioxide electrodes with an edible ionic-liquid electrolyte, designed to power ingestible medical devices. The battery, described in Nature Chemical Engineering, has been tested successfully in pigs and breaks down into absorbable materials after use.

nChroma Bio's epigenetic therapy silences hepatitis B virus in animal trials, now testing in humans

Researchers at nChroma Bio and Milan-based institutes developed a therapy that attaches chemical tags to the hepatitis B virus genome, silencing its genes without cutting DNA. Tests in human liver cells and mice showed the approach effectively blocked viral particle production, and monkey trials revealed only mild, short-lived side effects after a single dose. A human clinical trial has since begun in Hong Kong and New Zealand, with the first patient dosed in January.
