Hoboken, NJ marks seven years without a traffic fatality

Hoboken, New Jersey has recorded no traffic deaths since 2017, a result credited to expanded public transit investment, wider curbs for walkability, and camera data used to redesign crash-prone intersections. Officials note that proving an intersection's danger before acting on it remains a persistent obstacle, even in a success story. A similarly sharp improvement occurred in Edmonton, Alberta, which cut traffic fatalities by 63% and serious injuries by 40% between 2015 and 2020 through speed limit changes and crosswalk signal upgrades.

NTSB Links 2016 NJ Transit and LIRR Terminal Crashes to Engineer Sleep Apnea, Weak Safeguards

On September 29, 2016, a New Jersey Transit train failed to stop and crashed into Hoboken Terminal at about 21 mph, killing one person and injuring 110. Three months later, a Long Island Railroad train had a nearly identical failure at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, injuring 108 with no deaths. NTSB investigators found both engineers had undiagnosed sleep apnea and that neither train had systems capable of intervening before the crash.
